Mental Health Khutbah Guide

In recent years, American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) has recognized mental health as a critical issue in American Muslim communities. To address this, we have developed programs to increase mental health awareness and literacy.  This Khutbah Guide aims to encourage Muslims to view mental health with the  same importance as physical health. It provides insight into Islam’s perspective on  mental well-being and offers guidance for those seeking support. Our goal is to help  de-stigmatize mental illness, foster open conversations, and support individuals  who may be struggling in silence.

Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving (JACC)

JACC is a State-funded program that provides a broad array of in-home and community-based services to individuals aged 60 and older who meet clinical eligibility for nursing home level of care and who desire to remain in their homes within the community. The JACC program is designed with the goal of diverting or delaying the placement of the individual in a nursing facility. JACC aims to strengthen participants' networks of informal caregivers and to maximize autonomy by providing participants with the opportunity to direct their own care, including hiring their own providers, if desired.

What I Thought I Knew and (Didn't Know) About Ischemic Strokes

By Robin Abdul Lateef Pharms. My personal thoughts on strokes are that some people who never had a stroke think that only “high blood” pressure cause strokes, but that is not true. I found out the hard way that high cholesterol and pre-diabetic together can cause a stroke... even if it’s a warning stroke.  It is called by many names:  minor, mini, small or a TIA stroke. But in medical terms the proper name is a “Ischemic Stroke”.  To explain it more from my experience and research, blood carries oxygen to all areas of your body.  A Stroke happens when your blood does not flow to your brain like normal. If this happens, your brain will not get the oxygen it needs and brain tissue will die. This is an emergency. Problems (symptoms) of a stroke usually happens suddenly. You may notice them when you wake up. They can include:

- Loss of feeling or weakness on one side of the body (face, arm, leg).

- High blood pressure.

- High cholesterol.

- Feeling confused.

- Trouble talking or understanding.

-  Trouble seeing.

- Trouble walking.

- Feeling dizzy.

- Loss of balance or coordination.

- Severe headache without a cause.

- Trouble reading or writing.

RISK FACTORS

- Diabetes.

- High blood pressure.

- High cholesterol.

- Heart disease.

- Having a buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels.

- Having an abnormal heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation).

- Being very overweight (obese).

- Smoking.

- Taking birth control pills, especially if you smoke.

- Not being active.

- Having a diet high in fats, salt and calories.

- Drinking too much alcohol

- Using illegal drugs.

Magnesium

More Information by Robin Adul Lateef Pharms

From doing research on magnesium, I discovered magnesium is a very important mineral in the body, how we feel and function every day--yet it's also the second most common nutrient deficiency behind vitamin D says nutrition expert Samantha Mckinney, RD at Lifetime Magnesium. She explained how magnesium plays an essential role in supporting your muscles, nerves, energy levels and even your brain functions. It even helps regulates blood glucose and controls blood pressure. I personal experience these facts. I also found in my research that it keeps you relax and calm which helps you sleep better. There are different types of magnesium to accommodate all of these benefits that are mentioned. For me it mainly energized me. I call it the unsung hero in the mineral world. I experience the cramps in my legs disappeared when I started taking magnesium. I prefer the capsules than the tablets. But see what works for you. Please check with your doctor for how much mg you should buy and consume.
